Critical Thinking Questions
Directions: Answer each question in at least one complete paragraph with a clear topic sentence and supporting details. Use supporting details, examples, and descriptions from the novel and your own experience to answer. Write your answers on your Journal page.
1. What is your opinion of Achak's view of death? Is your own similar? Use the paragraph about the killing of the calf and his view on other violence to support your opinion.
I think i have similar opinion with the main character because life always have some accident that you can never know before. People usually think we will not face some terrible problem because probability is two low. Maybe that is a fluke mind or too naive. We will never know what happening for next ,life is strong also is weak. When the main character try to survive on the way that he face many difficult problem and there have many troubles that i can't to image that. One thing make me think in that situation he still continue working and finally come to USA. When he in the USA in that rob compare to before i think this event much better than before. The main character still think of death. So i think i agree depend on the situations.
2. Why do you think the book is called What is The What? How does the creation story of the Dinka people relate to larger ideas in life? What is the moral or meaning of the story?
I think the book is called "What is The What" because the main character is christian that his father told him that God said," You an either have these cattle, as my gift to you,or you can have the what." The main character's father waited for the necessary response from God. In this book the main character tell us the story of the cattle an the what ,but never end it ended this way. God had give the what to Arabs , and this was why the Arabs were inferior. The Dinka were given the cattle first, and the Arabs had to steal them. God had given the Dinka superior land, fertile and rich, and had given them cattle, and though it was unfair, that was how God had intended it and there was no changing it. The Arabs lived in the desert, without water or arable soil, and thus seeking to have some of God's bounty, They had to steal their cattle and then graze them in Dinkaland. they were very had herdsmen, the Arabs were, and because they didn't understand the value of cattle, they only butchered them. The moral of the story tell us that people can't too selfish because that will be serous injury to other people.People should respect to each other that nobody have power to abuse human right. Even though Arabs were inferior to the Dinka, But they are doing the things betray of God.
3. How do you think Achak felt with the boys? Why did he continue? Why didn't he give up? Would you do the same? How would your choices and thoughts be different or similar to his? Why?
Many of the boys was dead on the way that was bad memories for Achak because he was saw many people dead and he can't help anyone . This show me that he was felt his too weak get helpless that he can't save other Sudanese people on the way. Also the resources not enough for the boys there have no water, food, medical needs, and clothes. In the wasteland there have many lions that they are attack those boys and eat them. Even though when they try to survive also need face those soldiers that they will shooting them but they still need to keep their alive. because they came to the USA for thousand of Sudanese boys . I think Achak he continue walking even there have many challenges for him but there have chance to survive and change his future life. If he finally come to USA that he will take enough education and go back to help Those people get better life.
